INTRODUCTION Surrounded by the ocean, and inundated with natural hot springs, Japan is a nation with a large supply of water. Much of that water lies in the many lakes and rivers that can be found throughout the country. While the snow melts, particularly during tsuyu (rainy season), the rivers gush down the mountains and through the valleys. This is the perfect time to jump in a raft or kayak and feel the blood pumping through your veins as you negotiate the white water. If that sounds a bit too strenuous, there are many more sedate rivers where you can relax as the water lazily carries you along. Canoeing is another peaceful activity, and many lakes have rental equipment available. Jet skiing, water skiing, and wakeboarding are also popular. If you don't have a boat, or know someone with a boat, it can get a little expensive. Nonetheless, there are lots of lakes and rivers to choose from, and the price of fun and fresh air can't be measured. |
